More ways to find food near you
Before you go
Your first pantry visit
Pantries exist for exactly this, and people from every walk of life use them, including people with full-time jobs. There's no shame in it.
-
1
Call first
- Hours change often, and some pantries are open only a few days a week
- Ask if you need an appointment or must live in a certain area
- Ask what to bring
-
2
What to bring
- A photo ID, and maybe proof of address like a piece of mail. Many pantries ask for little or nothing.
- Bags or a box, since some don't have any
- A cooler for frozen or fresh food if you can
-
3
What to expect
- Many pantries just ask you to fill out a short form
- Canned and boxed food, often bread and produce, sometimes meat, eggs or milk
- Most limit visits, such as once a week or once a month, so ask, and use more than one pantry if you need to
Keep food coming
Help every month
Pantries help today. These programs help every month, and many people qualify who don't expect to.
SNAP (food stamps)

Pregnant, new moms, babies, kids under 5
- Healthy food, formula and nutrition help for pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, babies, and children up to age 5
- Income at or below 185% of the poverty line, and lower in some states
- On SNAP, Medicaid or TANF? You automatically meet the income rule
Free school meals
Breakfast and lunch at school
- Apply any time during the school year through your child's school or district
- Kids in households on SNAP automatically qualify for free meals, and TANF counts too
- Some schools serve free meals to every student. Ask yours
Summer food for kids
When school is out
- Free summer meals at schools, parks and community spots, for ages 18 and under, with no application
- Summer EBT (often called SUN Bucks): $120 in grocery money per school-age child in participating states
Meals for seniors
Ages 60+
- Meals on Wheels delivers to older adults who have trouble shopping or cooking
- Often free, by donation, or on a sliding scale
- Eldercare Locator: 1-800-677-1116 for meals and other help near you
Diapers & baby needs
Not covered by SNAP or WIC
