What's it really worth?
Asking prices online are often wishful. What things actually sold for is the real number. Type your item, pick what it is, then tap a source.

Know the difference
Selling to a pawn shop vs. a pawn loan
| Sell it | Pawn loan | |
|---|---|---|
| What happens | They buy it. You get cash and it's theirs. | They hold it and lend you cash. You pay back the loan plus fees to get it back. |
| Cost | Nothing after the sale. | Fees and interest are usually much higher than a bank or credit union loan. |
| If you can't pay | — | The shop keeps your item and you lose it. |
Our take: if you don't need the item back, sell it. Only pawn something you're sure you can pay back on time and don't want to lose. Ask for the total you'll owe, in dollars, before you sign.
Selling to a person
Safe meetup checklist
- Meet in public, in daylight. Many police departments have a "safe exchange zone" in their parking lot or lobby, often on camera. Search your city's name plus "police safe exchange zone."
- Bring someone with you, or at least tell a friend where you're going and when you'll be back.
- Take cash, counted before you hand over the item. Count it where you can see it.
- Don't accept a payment-app transfer from a stranger unless the money is already in your account and you've checked the app itself, not a text or email.
- Never take a check for more than your price.
- Big items? Don't let strangers into your home alone. Move the item to a garage or porch and have someone there with you.
- Selling a phone or laptop? Back it up, sign out of your accounts (iCloud or Google), then erase it before you meet.

Scam spotter
These are the scams the Federal Trade Commission warns sellers about most. If a buyer says something like this, stop.
"I just sent the money, check your email. Can you ship it now?"
Scammers send fake payment notices and hope you ship before you notice. Check the app or your bank directly. If the money isn't there, it isn't paid.
"I sent a check for extra by mistake. Just send me back the difference."
The check is fake. Your bank may show the money right away, but it can take weeks to find out the check bounced, and then you owe it all back. Never deposit a check for more than your price.
"I just want to make sure you're real. I'm sending you a code, can you read it back to me?"
They use the code to set up a phone number in your name, or to get into your accounts. Never share any verification code with someone you don't know.
"I'm out of town, my mover will pick it up. I'll pay extra if you hold it."
Pressure and odd pickup stories are warning signs. A real buyer can wait for the payment to clear or meet you in person with cash.
Got scammed or nearly? Report it at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the app you were selling on.
